God's Goodness

Writer: Barb LownsburyBarb Lownsbury

What do you think of when you think of good behavior?

When I was young, I envisioned good behavior as simply doing the right thing--sitting still in my chair when I want to squirm, not arguing with my parents, that sort of thing.  Now that I’m older, I see it as living a life directed by God’s Spirit, striving every day to walk out my faith in greater ways.

I was struck by a “good” reminder while reading through Deuteronomy.  The Israelites had been abundantly blessed in the desert after their escape from Egypt.  God fed them, ensured their clothes never wore out, and promised them a land to call their own.  Then God spoke words that caught my attention:

“You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’  But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today” (Deut. 8:17-18).

Those words leapt off the page, and I sat back in my chair, deeply reflective.  My goodness, my efforts, my skills and talents come from God.  My Creator alone is the source of every good thing I experience in my life.  Immediately, I remembered Jesus’ response when someone called him good.  “Why do you call me good?  No one is good—except God alone” (Mark 10:18).   And then the words of the Apostle James echoed in my heart: “Every good and perfect gift is from above.”

I’ve known, heard, and taught these truths countless times. Yet, why do I still let the enemy convince me that I’m unworthy of God’s love? That I’m not deserving of the blessings in my life, or enough to walk securely in His love?

Jesus

And that’s the point, friends. I may not be worthy on my own, but God chooses me anyway because of His incredible goodness. He rejoices over me with singing. He waves a big ole’ banner over me with the word LOVE boldly displayed. He alone can turn my mourning into dancing and put my pain to good purpose (Zeph. 3:17,  SS 2:3-5, Psalm 30:11, Ro. 8:28).

So why do I keep trying to earn my way into heaven? Why is it so hard sometimes to remember that all Jesus wants is to journey through life with me—that there’s nothing I have to earn or prove? If I end my life walking hand-in-hand with Jesus, that’s all that truly matters. Yet, I waste so much time worrying that I’m not smart enough, pretty enough, thin enough, rich enough, spiritual enough—or worse, getting lost in the rough seas of regret.

All that matters is to remember the Lord my God.  He will do the rest.  I walk with Jesus not to earn or prove, but because of how incredible my Creator is.  And I fight to rest in knowing that His goodness is something I can count on, and therefore be at peace.

FOR FURTHER THOUGHT

Take a moment today to reflect on all the blessings in your life. Instead of trying to earn every bit of goodness on your own, remember that every gift, talent, and moment of strength comes from God's gracious hand.

When doubts and pressures build up, consciously lean on His goodness rather than your own efforts through prayer, praise, gratitude and Bible study. Let the love and power you find there be the foundation of your actions, and allow that assurance to ease the weight of self-reliance.

Step forward with confidence, walking hand-in-hand with Jesus not to prove your worth, but to rest in the unchanging truth that His support and love are all you need. As a believer, you already possess His love—it’s a part of who you are and a secure foundation that empowers every step you take.

PRAYER

Papa, praise you for your faithfulness and goodness to me. When the enemy of my soul starts sowing words of doubt or confusion in my mind, or when I lose sight of your freeing truth, remind me of who you are. Remind me of how you love me. Remind me that through it all, the ups and downs and everyting in between, I am yours. Let me lean into your strength instead of my own, knowing your ways are always better. I place myself firmly in your capable hands.
