Do you know how long the average New Year’s resolution lasts? Thirty-six hours. That’s it! Yet every year, millions of people set goals with the hope that this year will be different. We create detailed plans, arm ourselves with resources, and rally our determination—only to watch those resolutions fizzle out before we’ve even flipped the calendar to February.
I’ve been there more times than I care to admit. Whether it’s weight loss, improving relationships, or building new habits, I’ve tried to muster enough willpower to push through, only to find myself right back where I started. Can you relate? It’s a frustrating cycle that leaves us wondering why change feels so elusive.
What I’ve come to realize is that lasting change doesn’t come from surface-level strategies alone. If I decide to lose a few extra pounds, grabbing the latest diet book or joining a gym might be a good start, but those steps alone won’t address the root of the issue. I might see some initial progress, but without addressing the deeper reasons behind my struggle, I’ll end up right back at square one—feeling defeated and discouraged.
Thankfully, God has shown me a better way. Real transformation begins beneath the surface, in the place where our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs reside. It’s about doing the heart work.
Proverbs 4:23 offers this wisdom: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” When God says, “above all else,” it’s a signal to stop and pay close attention. Our hearts—our innermost thoughts, emotions, and desires—are the driving forces behind our actions. If we’re not intentional about guarding and shaping them, we’ll find ourselves stuck in patterns we can’t seem to break.
Even the word “guard” is significant. Guarding implies vigilance because there’s an active threat. And if we’re honest, the most relentless attacker is often ourselves. How quickly can we spiral into self-doubt, criticism, or defeat? I know I can go from feeling confident to berating myself in a heartbeat. That’s why I’ve learned to fight back with God’s truth about who I am and what I’m capable of.
When we dig deeper into our goals and partner with God in the process, amazing things happen. Instead of just focusing on a number on the scale, I’ve learned to ask bigger, more meaningful questions: Do I believe I deserve to be healthy—not just intellectually, but deep in my heart? Why do I seek comfort in food when I’m stressed? Are there unresolved issues from my past holding me back?
These questions have helped me uncover the deeper roots of my struggle, and as I’ve brought them to God, He’s helped me reshape my perspective. That’s where lasting change begins—not in our actions alone but in the renewal of our hearts and minds.
And here’s the beautiful part: this principle applies to any goal or desire we’re working on with the Lord. Whether you’re pursuing better health, mending a broken relationship, or stepping into a new calling, the key to progress is looking beyond the checklist. Ask yourself: What beliefs, fears, or doubts might be keeping me from fully embracing this goal? Where do I need God’s truth to break through and replace lies with hope?
When we align our hearts with God’s truth and invite Him into the process, change becomes not only possible but deeply transformative. It’s no longer about striving in our strength but about allowing Him to do the deeper work that leads to freedom and growth.
FOR FURTHER THOUGHT
As you approach the New Year, think of the one goal you most want to achieve. Beyond crafting your action steps, consider the deeper thoughts or emotions that might block your progress. Identify them, then partner with God through scripture and prayer to tackle them. Seek help from trusted resources if needed. You are a child of God, and He desires to bless you with freedom and growth—don’t let anything, not even your own doubts, hold you back!
PRAYER
God, I come to You with the desires and goals on my heart, knowing I can’t create lasting change on my own. Help me to see beyond the surface and uncover the deeper thoughts and emotions that hold me back. Shine Your truth into the places where I’ve believed lies about myself, and guide me in guarding my heart with Your love and wisdom. Teach me to rely on Your strength, to trust Your timing, and to embrace the transformation You are working in me. Thank You for walking with me every step of the way. Amen.
